“The Yellow Poui Tree, Wild and beautiful”
About this photo series
“The Yellow Poui Tree, Wild and beautiful” created in 2022, presented in 2024.
The Yellow Poui Tree, Tabebuia chrysantha, is native to Trinidad and Tobago and while the Pink and white are very popular, these were introduced here. They are mostly found on the hillsides of the Northern Range in addition to parks and green spaces. Initially, what would seem like the solitary or isolated tree scattered about on the hillsides signals the igniting of the impending dominance of these vivid yellow blooms. In a matter of days one isolated tree will give way to numerous groups of yellow blooming large trees which seem to encircle and outnumber their non-flowering counterparts. Soon the hillsides erupt with yellow during the mornings in enchanting light and evenings at sunset where backlit flowers take on a dreamy appearance. Eventually however, as the cycle of life and nature is temporal, blossoms fall in mere days after blooming creating an interesting carpet over the greens.
"Ignite" 2022. It all starts with one or two on the hillsides and then in a matter of time the hillsides erupt with colour much like this beautiful sunset over the hills with a few lonesome Poui trees. Only for a short time though, as in a few days this hillside was "Engulfed" in yellow.
“Poui magic” 2022. There is something magical about the Poui tree in bloom, something even more remarkable when you get what seems like a magical shaft of golden light beaming its way over the mountain tops to illuminate the hillsides and create a memorable scene. From the day I photographed this, it has remained with me, etched in my memory and I remember it as if it were yesterday. The light lasted for a short time, a fleeting moment of magic just as the Poui tree’s peak blooms began to fall to the forest floor by the following day and just like that, this moment was never to be relived or recreated......gone forever.
“Engulfed” 2022. The yellow poui tree, Tabebuia chrysantha, apart from public spaces, can initially be seen scattered and isolated about the hillsides. Then in a matter of days this will give way to numerous trees in groups of yellow outnumbering the lush adjacent non-flowering trees. What a sight to behold!!!
“Blooming embers” 2022 I found the trees and their varied stages of flowering in this frame to be rather interesting, additionally I loved the form of the green tree in the central portion of the frame and how it stood out against all of the dense foliage with its beauty despite the potential chaos. More importantly, I loved the trees in the background that reminded me of dying embers of a fire with their vivid yellow flowers.
