Collection 1
“Orange Valley Blues”
About this collection
Orange Valley, situated along Trinidad’s central west coast, is an area which has become synonymous for its amazing sunset views over the years with many photographers. Additionally it is an area which is frequented by “birders” for the many shore birds which can be seen from this small man-made spit of land jutting out in the Gulf of Paria from which fishermen secure and launch their fishing pirogues. It is one of the largest fishing bases in the country and is also home to a thriving wholesale fish market. As a result, many images from this area will more often than not have fisherfolk, fishing pirogues and other related paraphernalia as their subject matter.
In this instance, my vision for this collection was two fold; firstly to highlight the characteristic blue fiberglass internals of the ubiquitous fishing pirogue which is found at this location (and other Trinidad fishing villages) and secondly to depict these scenes with a less common cooler toned colour palette as opposed to the typical fiery sunset which you would often see depicted from this location. This purposeful approach was geared toward focusing the viewer to the subject matter at hand without unnecessary distraction from other elements which would otherwise be the star of the show in the usual depiction from this location.
These, albeit simple captures at first glance, were carefully captured on suitable outings to this location with this collection in mind and are intended to be viewed together as a cohesive and homogenous collection………..the “Orange Valley Blues”.
